How Does Bone Grafting Work?

Dental Implants are an incredibly effective solution for replacing missing teeth. Following a successful implant procedure, patients are able once again to talk, smile, and eat with the confidence that they did before their tooth loss. The procedure requires a healthy mouth and sufficient bone structure. Decay or disease must be addressed before undergoing the procedure, and a bone graft may be necessary to build up the jawbone.

The first step in a bone graft procedure is to obtain the graft tissue. This normally comes from bone in another part of the patient’s body, but it can also come from donors, animals, or be made synthetically. During the procedure, the gums are temporarily lifted from the underlying bone. The graft tissue is then attached with a screw or a special dissolving membrane to the bone. The gums are sutured back into place over the newly-placed tissue and the site is left to heal.

When are bone grafts necessary?

Patients who lack a strong and healthy bone structure will require a bone graft to build up the bone before an implant can be placed. If a tooth is replaced soon after it has been lost, the jawbone is usually sufficiently strong as it has not been affected by disease. However, if a significant amount of time has passed between the loss of a tooth and the attempt to replace it, it’s more likely that jaw health will have declined – without having to support a tooth, the jawbone gradually weakens and deteriorates, making a bone graft necessary.

The Best Ways to Whiten Your Smile?

Do you often dream of a brighter, healthier-looking smile like the ones you see on TV and in the movies? With advancements in dentistry, there are now more ways than ever to supposedly whiten your smile, however which ways are the best? Today, Carlsbad Coastal Dental is discussing teeth whitening and the best ways to achieve a brighter smile.

DIY Teeth Whitening

When it comes to “do-it-yourself teeth whitening” there are a range of options available, including:

  • Teeth Whitening Strips
  • Teeth Whitening Toothpaste
  • Teeth Whitening Mouthwash

These store-bought teeth whitening products however have quite a few flaws. When it comes to the design, over-the-counter teeth whitening products are designed to ONLY remove exterior staining (which could be just as easily removed by properly brushing your teeth). Due to the fact these products aren’t designed using strong chemicals, the results are often less than to be desired as well, often taking months for even the slightest result. Along with the poor results, tooth sensitivity and irritation of the gums is quite common when using at home teeth whitening products, often resulting in discomfort and pain.

Professional Teeth Whitening

With professional teeth whitening there are a variety of options available depending upon which dentist you visit, however both in-office and take-home professional teeth whitening is often available. With professional teeth whitening, the treatments are designed to remove both exterior and interior staining, providing results in just one appointment. We also make sure to protect your gums, reducing your risk for irritation or sensitivity of the teeth and/or gums. Take-home kits are often available for maintenance in between visits with your teeth whitening dentist.
